Endodontic Pre-Surgical Instructions
You have been scheduled for Endodontic (Root Canal) surgery. These appointments are limited in number so it is essential that you keep the appointment date. If circumstances arise that prevent you from keeping your appointment, please contact us at (386) 252-0858 as soon as possible.
- If you have been prescribed a medication to take before your surgery, follow the directions exactly. Failure to do so may require re-scheduling your surgery.
- Make sure to take your normal daily prescriptions on the day of surgery (i.e.; blood pressure, insulin, etc.). The only exception to this is Aspirin and some other anti-coagulants that would prolong bleeding during and after surgery. These issues must be discussed with Dr. MacIntyre and your primary care physician.
- To avoid complications, if there is a change in your medical condition since your evaluation appointment, be sure to notify us as soon as possible.
- You may eat a normal meal before surgery, but do not over-eat! Most patients are able to eat soon after surgery. It is recommended to stock up on some soft, easy-to-eat foods (soups, cereal, peanut butter and jelly, noodles) for the day of surgery. Clear liquids such as water or light juice are excellent to drink after surgery.
- Please make arrangements to take off work or school for the remainder of the day of surgery and ideally the day after. For the two days following, you may return to work, but please maintain a light schedule. You may be required to return one week after surgery to have your stitches removed or for the follow-up appointment. If you will not be able to return for this appointment, notify us before the surgery.
- Medications may be prescribed for you following the surgery. No medication administered during the surgery will prevent you from driving back to your home. You may not need an escort to drive home. If you have been prescribed an oral sedative, then you will need to have a driver take you home!
- For a minimum of ten days following surgery you should not leave the Volusia County area. Many dentists are not trained or well-equipped to handle post-surgical treatment and you may jeopardize your health by leaving the area. If you are planning to depart the area, please notify us before the appointment.
